The Marine Series
The predominant motifs in this marine series reflect the artist's background in Ichthyology (the study of fishes) and their past experience in recreational scuba diving.
In the present card series, taken from textile art hangings, five designs were developed to reflect the appearance of two distinct marine vertebrates:
1. Ocean perch, ray-finned fishes, a division of the teleosts (bony fishes). In particular, these imaginative textile designs are based on the rockfish species, native to the Pacific Ocean.
2. Flounders, bottom-living flatfish of both the Pacific and Atlantic coastal waters. The artist's design was based on the starry flounder, common in the waters around Vancouver Island, BC. Their family name is in the same division as halibut, the Pleuronectidae.
